Argentina has about 1000 different species of birds, of which 145 species can be found in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. A few of them are endangered according to information supplied by Birdlife International.
El Chaltén, with its forests and lakes, is an ideal area to visit and bird watch throughout the year. It´s possible to go looking for a variety of species: some of which are endemic to the Patagonian Andes. Species like the Rhea, Magellanic woodpecker, Grebe, Austral Flamingo, Black necked Swan, Upland goose, Black Chested buzzard Eagle, Andean Condor, Caracara chimango, Falcons, Pygmy Owl, Swallows, Patagonian thrush, Black necked ibis and the Austral Parakeet can all be found in the area.
Specialists claim that here large populations of endangered species can still be found in comparison to their other areas of distribution. Furthermore you can find rare or less known species, because the area has still not been thoroughly investigated or observed. But, a red light of alert is on: increase in cattle, erosion and the introduction of exotic plants means the habitat of many birds is going to come under risk and the worst possibility is of it disappearing.
Come and walk with the Walk Patagonia guides and discover the amazing world of the birds!
