Description

This is an easy walk through one of the most beautiful mature lenga forests of the area. The walk takes you to the private campground of Piedra del Fraile; the departure point for all expeditions who dare to cross the Southern Ice Field. In order to get to the Pollone Glacier you continue further along the valley. The landscape takes on gigantesque standards and is pure stone, water and ice.

Itinerary

The day starts with a 30 minute transfer from Chaltén to Río Electrico, along an unpaved road. From here we start walking along the Electrico valley, the path is easy, pretty even while it works its way through an enchanting lenga forest.

After about 2 hours we arrive at Piedra del Fraile Refuge (Stone of the Friar), named after Father Alberto de Agostini. In his times of exploring he used to set up his base camp right here, using the large rock as a refuge against the strong winds from the Continental Ice Field.

After a short break and some lunch we continue along the valley towards the Pollone Glacier. The trek here is against the prevailing winds from the Continental Ice field. We are able to appreciate raw nature at its best; pure rock and ice. Along the way we admire a different angle of Mt Fitz Roy, its Northern Face, and if we are lucky we’ll understand why the Tehuelches (the original indigenous people in the area) named the mountain El Chaltén - “the mountian that smokes”.

After a short break at this hidden lagoon at the base of the mountains we head back to Piedra del Fraile and back to the Eléctrico Bridge and on to Chaltén
