Patagonian scenery, for its unequivocal beauty, has been used for many years by Correo Argentino (Argentine post) to create some beautiful philatelic pieces of work.
The image of Mount Fitz Roy has been captured on two stamps and on the same amount of postmarks for special occasions or commemorative dates.
The extreme beauty of these stamps and also their rarity due to little circulation has turned these into very interesting specimens from an aesthetic point of view; especially for those with one of the following two passions: mountains and philately.
“Mount Fitz Roy” stamp
Catalogue:
Year of issue:
1955 – 1st December
Description:
As a model, the Italian artist Pietro Nicastro used a photograph that had been included in the book, “Al asalto del Fitz Roy,” by Louis Depasse, steel plate engraved, the beautiful 20 peso stamp with Mount Fitz Roy in the foreground. Its fate was to be used in a series of stamps called "Próceres y Riquezas Nacionales" (National Heroes and the Country’s Natural Resources).
The stamps were printed using a steel printing machine by the Casa de Moneda de la Nación on paper with a watermark of a round sun, in a lilac grey colour.
Perforations: 13 1/2 x 13 1/2 and 13 1/2 x 13.
Furthermore they were overprinted typographically with the "Servicio Oficial" (Official service), to frank correspondence from the Ministries and other Government offices.
Louis Depasse participated in the French expedition, whose participants included Lionnel Terray and Guido Magnone. They conquered for the first time the famous Patagonia mount (called “El Chaltén” by the Tehuelche Indians) on the 2nd February 1952.

Photograph by Louis Depasse of the illustration in his book, “Al asalto del Fitz Roy”, Buenos Aires, 1953. The image that Correo Argentino chooses for this lovely stamp.
