A recommended trek for those who want to enjoy the indescribable views across the Southern Ice Field. A real excitement being able to arrive at the classic “port of entry” to the Ice Field – the Marconi Pass.

Itinerary

DAY 1
Transfer from El Chaltén to the Eléctrico River Bridge where the trek begins. We will trek past Piedra del Fraile, walk along the Pollone River; circle the Eléctrico River until we arrive at La Playita (The little beach) where we will set up camp. The terrain of the walk initially is through a lovely lenga forest, which then turns into an open and exposed area; which is rocky and lacking in vegetation and therefore more exposed to the prevailing westerly winds from the Southern Ice Field.

DAY 2
We leave from base very early with a light back pack. After about an hour of walking we will arrive at the Marconi glacier (the port of entry to the ice field) and start our ascent. On the glacier we will use crampons and/or snow shoes, depending on the terrain conditions. It is about 6 hours walking from the camp to the Marconi Pass (1500masl) and an elevation change of more than 900m. It is from here you will be presented with a panoramic view of the Mounts Fitz Roy, Gorra Blanca, the GAEA range, Lautaro, Pier Giorgio and Marconi. The return will be along the same path and should take about 4 hours back to the base at La Playita.

DAY 3
Return to Río Eléctrico Bridge (6hours) and return to El Chaltén.
