Itinerary

Day 1
Start the trek from El Chaltén towards Toro lagoon along the Túnel River Valley, passing by Pliegue Tumbado. We will camp at Toro lagoon (650masl). We will walk for about 6 hours and there will be an elevation change of about 500m.

Day 2
After breakfast and taking down camp we set off for the Windy Pass with an elevation change of 900m. After walking for about 30 to 40 minutes we arrive at Túnel River, which must be crossed over by using a Tyrolean rope in order to be able to carry on with the trek. The interesting part of this stretch is the variety of terrains crossed; pastures, stony areas, moraines and the Lower Glacier Túnel. On arriving at the Windy Pass (1550masl), you can appreciate a great view of part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the start of Viedma Glacier and Mount Mariano Moreno, amongst others. We then descend to the Windy Pass Refuge (900masl) to camp. We will be trekking for about 6 to 7 hours.

Day 3
We continue trekking around Mount Huemul until we reach Huemul Pass (987masl); where you will enjoy impressive views of the Glacier and Lake Viedma – the largest glacier on the eastern side of the Southern Continental Ice Field. The estimated time of walking today is 6 to7 hours. We will camp near the Huemul Pass, at some 900masl, in a lenga forest.

Day 4
After breakfast we start the descent, on a rocky terrain, with an elevation change of about 600m, as we head towards the Iceberg Bay of the Lake Viedma (300masl). We will trek for about 3 hours and from there we will catch the Viedma Discovery Boat to transfer to Túnel Bay (subject to availability). From the bay we then have a vehicle transfer back to El Chaltén.
